An Explosive Ignition

AutoIndustriya.com and Ethanworks literally lit up the night skies over Pier One in the Fort Bonifacio Global City two weeks ago with IGNITION! – a seven-segment weekend event for car enthusiasts.

Presented by PLDT MyDSL, in cooperation with Outlast Battery and Castrol GTX Magnatec, IGNITION proved to be not just your everyday motor show, as it served as the kick-off affair for the 2002 Philippine motorsports season.

For the first time in this country’s history, racing teams from all disciplines launched their 2002 campaign in a team display featuring an array of professional racing teams and their furiously fast race cars.

A fashion show featuring the latest in cool clothes and accessories added glamour to the launch, while a car audio competition organized by dB Drag Racing Philippines showcased the loudest vehicles in the country with their wildest setups.

Cool music and hot beats filled the balmy air while sumptuous dinner and cool drinks were served at the Pier One decks to guests and patrons alike. The refreshments were definitely needed since automotive-related products that were on display at the stands around the race car display area made everybody’s mouth water and some wallets dry. Booths displaying Tomica, FGS Incorporated and Quick Change were actively promoting their products.

The second day, Sunday, saw cars line up to compete in Show and Shine competition. While judges were busy mulling over their choices, kids and the young-at-heart were treated to cool games and slot car racing and radio-control car racing.

When the dust of the competition has settled, and after the judges cast their votes, the winning cars were announced.

The 1963 Volkswagen Beetle of Rene Chipeco got the Pier One’s Choice award, while its distant cousin, the silver 1985 Porsche 911 of Luis Villar, Jr. was awarded Castrol’s Choice. The PLDT MyDSL Best-In-Show award went to Kit Asilar and his retina-burning red 1994 Toyota Corolla.

Also presented in part by Yehey!, Ray Ban Sunglasses, Optical Works with special support from Suncon Toys, John Robert Powers, C! Magazine, Auto Review, Auto Extreme, 105.1 Crossover, Monster Radio RX93.1, NU 107.5, Motorista.com.ph and Drive Online, IGNITION! promises to be another addition to the annual local automobile events that car enthusiasts can look forward to.
