MANILA, Philippines — Police stations have beefed up security in anticipation of possible attacks by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels as the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) marks its founding anniversary today.

Philippine National Police (PNP) public information officer Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said commanders of far-flung and isolated police stations, which are vulnerable to attacks, were ordered to strengthen their defenses.

“Make sure they do not fall victims of harassment and ambuscades,” Fajardo said.

With the arrest of several NPA leaders, Fajardo said they are not discounting the possibility that communist rebels would launch retaliatory attacks on the CPP’s anniversary.

The PNP has said it would not declare a suspension of police operations against the NPA as the rebels have used the SOPO to initiate attacks.

“There will be no SOPO for the purposes of their celebration this Dec. 26 and the whole duration of the holiday season,” Fajardo said.
