Lapu-Lapu eyeing to expand sports programs

CEBU, Philippines — The Lapu-Lapu City government is exploring closer coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to expand grassroots sports programs and create more opportunities for young athletes.

The possible partnership was discussed during PSC Commissioner Edward Hayco’s courtesy visit to Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King Chan, where local sports officials and coaches also presented the city’s existing sports programs.

Among those who joined the meeting were City Sports Commissioner Vince Dominique Carungay, City Tourism Officer Garry Lao, football coach Jesus Jumao-as, and arnis coach Jonel Espinosa Pepito.

The discussions focused on how the city and the national sports agency could work together in developing young athletes, particularly those who are still at the grassroots level.

Hayco expressed the PSC’s openness to working with the city in strengthening its sports development efforts.

The city’s sports commission presented its ongoing grassroots activities, including sports clinics and training programs for local athletes.

These programs are intended to give young athletes opportunities to develop their skills and gain experience before moving on to higher levels of competition.

The city also provides assistance and incentives to athletes representing Lapu-Lapu City in major competitions.

Chan said recognizing athletes’ achievements is part of encouraging young Oponganons to pursue sports.

“Mao kini ang atong gusto para sa atong mga young Oponganon athletes nga tagaan ug dungog ang ilang mga kalampusan pinaagi sa ilang determinasyon,” she said.

Lapu-Lapu has produced athletes who have competed in national and international events, raising the possibility of further developing a pool of homegrown athletes through sustained grassroots programs.

For now, the city and the sports commission are looking at possible areas of cooperation that could give young athletes greater access to training and competition. — (FREEMAN)
