History, finally: Eala conquers Pegula for maiden WTA crown
MANILA, Philippines — Different year. Different stage. Different ending.
This time, Alex Eala didn't just challenge one of the world's best players — she overcame her.
The 21-year-old Filipina completed the biggest victory of her young career, toppling World No. 3 and top seed Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to capture the Mubadala DC Open title early Monday (Manila time), becoming the first Filipino ever to win a WTA singles championship.
It was more than a breakthrough. It was a coming-of-age performance that announced Eala's arrival among the elite of women's tennis.
Even more remarkable was how she did it.
After rain suspended the championship match with Pegula leading, 6-4, 1-2, Eala returned to the court looking like an entirely different player. During the lengthy delay, she recalibrated — not only physically but mentally — mapping out the adjustments she needed to dismantle an opponent who came into the final with 11 WTA singles titles and one of the tour's most formidable all-around games.
What followed was nothing short of breathtaking.
Locked in from the restart, Eala unleashed wave after wave of fearless, attacking tennis. She repeatedly pinned Pegula behind the baseline with explosive groundstrokes, dictated short rallies with her heavy forehand, ripped winners off both wings, and chased down seemingly unreachable balls with relentless determination.
Every point carried the conviction of a player who believed the title was hers to claim.
After leveling the match by breaking Pegula in the 10th game of the second set, Eala completely flipped the script.
She stormed through the deciding set, breaking the American over and over while refusing to give her any breathing room. The World No. 3, a proven champion with 11 career WTA singles crowns, had no answer for the Filipina's relentless aggression, power, precision and unwavering belief.
The final set became a showcase of total domination.
Eala reeled off the last nine games of the match, winning 10 of the 13 games played after the resumption. She shut down Pegula, 6-0, in the third set, surrendering only eight points in one of the most commanding stretches of tennis seen in a WTA 500 championship match in recent memory.
It was tennis at its most fearless.
Eala’s vastly improved serve consistently put Pegula under pressure. The Filipina’s penetrating forehand repeatedly opened up the court, while her backhand absorbed and redirected the American's pace with stunning consistency. Whenever Pegula tried to seize momentum, Eala responded with even greater intensity, refusing to yield an inch.
Roared on by a crowd that had increasingly embraced the Filipina throughout the week, Eala played with the confidence of a veteran champion and the fearless exuberance of a rising star determined to seize her moment.
When Pegula's final backhand sailed long, history was complete.
Eala dropped her racket before collapsing to her knees, covering her face as the magnitude of the moment washed over her.
She embraced Pegula at the net before sprinting toward the stands to hug coach Joan Bosch.
Still overwhelmed and in excitement, she accidentally tossed her wrist bands toward the event announcer. Returning to her chair, she immediately called her family.
"Oh my God. Oh my God."
She repeated the words over and over, tears streaming down her face as she tried to process the achievement.
By the time the trophy presentation began, she had regained her composure — but not yet the words.
"Oh my gosh, where do I start?" Eala said, pausing as she absorbed the enormity of becoming the first Filipino to lift a WTA trophy.
She thanked her family, her team, especially coach Bosch, "for putting in the work every day with me."
Her biggest message, however, was reserved for the countless Filipinos who had fueled her remarkable run.
"I want to thank all my supporters, especially the Filipino community here in DC and back home and wherever you are in the world. I feel all the love. Maraming-maraming salamat, mga kababayan," she said.
Aside from making history, Eala also pocketed $252,000 (around P15.44 million), the richest prize of her career.
Pegula, meanwhile, graciously acknowledged the emergence of the sport's newest star.
"I congratulate Alex for an amazing week and an amazing tournament," said Pegula.
"You're an amazing player. Just seeing how far you've come over the last couple of years since we first played... to see the amazing fans follow you everywhere you go — it's not fun to play against — but I appreciate the incredible atmosphere. All the best to you, your team and your coach,” she added.
Perhaps, in hindsight, Eala's title run had been quietly building toward this defining moment all week.
She exacted revenge against Zheng Qinwen and Leylah Fernandez, defeated Elina Svitolina once again, and stunned former World No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in their first-ever meeting.
Each victory represented another statement.
The final became the loudest one yet.
It also completed a measure of redemption.
Just over a year after Pegula denied her a place in the Miami Open final in three sets — a tournament that introduced Eala to the tennis world — the Filipina returned the favor on an even grander stage.
This time, she didn't merely beat Pegula.
She overwhelmed her.
Grand Slam glory may still lie ahead, but Eala has already crossed another historic frontier.
No longer simply one of the game's brightest prospects, she is now a WTA champion.
Next comes the Canadian Open, where both Eala and Pegula receive first-round byes. A potential third-round rematch with reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, who defeated Eala in Berlin earlier this season, could await.
But Eala will arrive in Canada transformed.
Armed with a career-defining title, renewed belief and surging momentum, she no longer enters tournaments hoping to contend.
She enters them knowing she belongs.
