Alex Eala makes history at Wimbledon
CEBU, Philippines — Alex Eala made history again, this time as the first Filipina tennis player to win a match at Wimbledon in the Open era.
Eala dominated Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to reach the Wimbledon second round at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London late Tuesday night.
Competing in her first Grand Slam tournament as a seeded player, the 21-year-old Eala dropped just three games in pulling off the historic triumph.
After a 1-1 deadlock, the 29th seed Eala won five straight games in an impressive opening-set performance.
The World No.32 Eala sustained her momentum, winning the first two games of the second set before cruising to a commanding 5-1 lead.
Eala will next face Australian youngster Maya Joint, who spoiled the Wimbledon comeback of Serena Williams in a grueling three-set battle.
The American legend’s first singles match in four years ended in a heart-breaking 6-3, 6-7 (6/8) 6-3 defeat at the hands of Joint.
