MANILA, Philippines — A tugboat captain died when a foreign vessel hit the boat’s towing line, causing it to capsize in the waters off Sarangani yesterday morning, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.

The PCG identified the fatality as Andres Diaz Jr., captain of the M/Tug Sadong 33.

A crewmember was reportedly rescued, although the PCG said there was no update yet on his status.

Six other crewmembers of the Sadong were rescued by LCT Sea Asia.

Reports said the Sadong was towing the Sea Asia when the Panamanian-registered vessel MV Universe Kiza passed between the two boats at past 4 a.m.

“The foreign vessel might have yanked the towing line, causing the Sadong to lose its balance. It was dark and the foreign ship might not have noticed the towing line,” the PCG said.
