MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers (PIIE) will celebrate its 25th anniversary, in a return to a face-to-face format, at the New World Makati on Oct.27.

The 18th PIIE Plenary Congress and 9th Research Conference will be held during the day, with a gala awards dinner when this year’s PIIE luminaries will be presented.

Roberto Bontia, chief transformation officer at Metro Pacific Tollways and committee chairman for the PIIE 25th anniversary, said of special interest for the PIIE this year is “highlighting the role of the IE mindset when it comes to digital transformation, sustainability and artificial intelligence – three of the hottest trends and buzzwords of the day.”

“The digital transformation we hear so much about today, often goes hand in hand with the generative AI, whose exponential growth, development and applications, are often the discussion of social commentators and tech observers,” he said.

The PIIE views AI as a tool to improve processes and to be helpful in problem analysis and constructing strategies. The IE mindset is ideal here, as the symbiotic relationship requires a qualified mind to sift through and decide which data has to be fed, and if not useful, garbage out.

“The industrial engineer stands on the cusp of what our tomorrow will look like, and it’s heartening to find that the Filipino IE is well represented by the PIIE,” said Jerry Lim, president of PIIE.

Composed of more than 3,000 professional members and 12,000 student members from more than 60 schools all over the country, PIIE is a model umbrella organization that endeavors to promote continuous growth in the field of industrial engineering in the Philippines.
