MANILA, Philippines — For over four decades, Mega Global Corporation has been committed to improving the everyday lives of Filipinos, not only by making high-quality, value-for-money canned products, but also by providing thousands of jobs to communities.

Through its brand Mega Sardines, the company is known for its breakthrough 12-hour catching-to-canning process. This employs a state-of-the-art sonar and finder that ensure the freshness of the fish from the time they are caught to the time they are canned. Two canning factories employ locals from the city and neighboring towns of Zamboanga Peninsula in Mindanao.

Today, Mega Global strengthens its commitment to Filipinos and communities as the first batch of 3,000 employees graduate from the Philippine Navy’s Reserve Command in Zamboanga City. Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad, Flag Officer in Command of the Philippine Navy, and Rear Admiral Eric Kagaoan of Philippine Naval Forces Western Mindanao, presented the certificates to the graduates.

The Philippine Navy Affiliated Reservist Unit (PNARU) under the Naval Reserve Command, enlisted Mega Global as a reserve force to augment the naval force particularly for disaster response and outreach programs.

"In Zamboanga City alone, Mega Global’s fishing arm, Mega Fishing Corporation, has the largest sardines fishing fleet in the country with over 85 commercial fishing vessels that will be able to help in times of need," said Marvin Tiu Lim, vice president for Sales and Marketing.

Executives led by William Tiu Lim, president and chief executive officer, Michael Tiu Lim, vice president for Business Development, Malcolm Tiu Lim, vice president for Zamboanga Operations, Michelle Tiu Lim Chan, vice president for Finance, Export and Support Group, and Jansen Chan, vice president for External Affairs, attended the graduation rites. It was a proud moment for the employees and the company as Mega Global officially became a naval reserve force.

“When needed, Mega Global’s employees turned Navy reservists can be deployed to help their fellow Filipinos affected by disasters like typhoons and earthquakes, staying true to the company’s commitment to improve lives and help in nation-building,” added Marvin Tiu Lim.

Corporate social responsibility at its core

Mega Global’s journey as PNARU goes all the way back to its outreach activities with the Philippine Navy—as part its corporate social responsibility (CSR), which is at the core of the company.

At first, Mega Tiu Lim Foundation signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NAVFORWEM) led by Captain Talingdan. This partnership brought Mega Global to outreach programs in places like Sulade Basilan, Sarawai, Ozamis City, and Oroquieta City.

Volunteer employees and management held various medical missions and feeding programs, which led Mega Global closer to the Philippine Navy. Thus, at the initiative of then Rear Admiral Rene Medina, Mega Fishing Corporation submitted its application for PNARU. The doors of Vice Admiral Roberto Empedrad accepted the application and further inspired Mega to be a stronger partner with the Philippine Navy.

“The leadership of our very endearing Rear Admiral Eric Kagaoan has brought the partnership of Mega and NAVFORWEM to the family level. Our very gracious Rear Admiral Kagaoan did not waver in his commitment to grace our company's activities in reaching out to our employees and their families. Impromptu speeches and dancing were given by our Rear Admiral Eric Kagaoan in our activities that were graced with his honorable presence,” said Girlie Lactao, assistant vice president for Mega Global’s Zamboanga operations, during her speech.

“The PNARU requirement of weekly lectures, the exams, and the culminating Field Training Exercise brought Mega key leaders to a new level of leadership, one that is wrapped in humility and camaraderie. The leadership of Major Balderamos is highly appreciated as our NAVFORWEM partners continue to motivate our Mega leaders to be brave and determined to finish the tasks ahead,” Lactao continued.

The graduation marks Mega Global's commitment to be one with the Philippine Navy in its aspiration to help in nation building. It is the company’s way of giving back to society that has made Mega the number one in the hearts of many Filipinos.
