MANILA, Philippines - Manila Water subsidiary Boracay Water has completed the upgrade of its Balabag Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), doubling its previous capacity.
In a statement, Manila Water Co. Inc said the upgrade was completed four years ahead of schedule.
The upgraded wastewater treatment plant would now treat up to 6.5 million liters of wastewater per day, double its previous capacity of 2.6 million liters per day.
Manila Water said this would serve the growing needs of the island.
“We sped up the upgrade of our STP because of the urgency of the wastewater needs of Boracay,†said Boracay Water general manager and chief operating officer Ben Mañosca.
“With the tourist influx in the island hitting the one million mark ahead of schedule, we too had to keep apace to ensure that our services are sufficient for this growing tourism hub,†he added.
Manila Water said the wastewater that comes out of the treatment plant is 100 percent compliant with the wastewater treatment standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
Manila Water said that aside from the upgrade of its wastewater treatment facility, Boracay Water also embarked on other wastewater service improvements.
Boracay Water started operating the water and wastewater services in Boracay Island in 2010 when the Tourism and Infrastructure Enterprise Zone Authority partnered with Manila Water to improve the water supply in Boracay Island.
Boracay Water intends to achieve a 100- percent coverage of its concession area from the current coverage rate of more than 80 percent.
