Joey A. Bermudez, chairman of Maybridge (Asia), Inc., a multinational financial services company, is the president of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) for 2009. Bermudez is the 60th president of MAP since its inception in 1950.
Before joining Maybridge (Asia), Inc., Bermudez was in banking for almost three decades. For about seven years, he served as president and CEO of Chinatrust (Philippines), Inc. Prior to this, he was senior executive vice president and COO of the Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank), the retail and consumer banking arm of the Metrobank Group. He also previously worked with Standard Chartered Bank as country consumer banking head for the Philippines and with the Philippine Commercial International Bank (now BDO) where he spent 14 years doing consumer banking and middle market lending.
For 10 years prior to his retail and consumer banking engagement, his preoccupation was the development of financing programs for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Aside from delivering financial services to the middle market, he dedicated himself to the formulation and execution of risk-mitigation schemes for agribusiness projects, medium-sized exporters, small businessmen, medium/low-cost housing developers, local government and countryside enterprises. Many of these programs reaped awards and support from multilateral and bilateral institutions and government agencies.
Bermudez received extensive overseas training in the fields of general management, retail banking, corporate banking, development finance, credit risk management, marketing and sales, and financial controllership. He attended the Pacific Rim Bankers’ Program sponsored by the University of Washington and the Pacific Coast Banking School. In addition, he completed the Strategic Business Economics Program of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P). A certified public accountant, he holds a BS Commerce (major in accountancy) degree from the University of Santo Tomas and a Master in Business Economics from the UA&P.
A father of five, he is married to Ester Quizon Villa, a finance executive herself before she became a full-time housewife and part-time entrepreneur.
Other officers of the MAP for 2009 are Medel T. Nera, partner of SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co., as vice president; Judith Duavit Vasquez, CEO of PHCOLO Inc., as treasurer; and Eusebio V. Tan, managing partner of Angara Abello Concepcion Regala & Cruz (ACCRALAW), as secretary.
