IBM tops RP’s server, storage markets in 2004

IBM has attained leadership position in the overall server market and total storage market in the Philippines for the year 2004, according to premier IT market intelligence firm International Data Corp. (IDC).

The company emerged the leader in both IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker and Asia/Pacific Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker reports for the fourth quarter of 2004.

IBM emerged market leader in the overall server market space in the Philippines, registering a 41.1-percent revenue share for 2004. IBM led the x86 server market with a 33.3 percent revenue share in 2004. In the Linux server market, IBM also emerged as the leader with a 60.5-percent year-on-year growth rate in revenue terms for a 32.3-percent revenue market share in 2004. In the rapidly growing x86 Blade server market, IBM was the only vendor to gain revenue share, which surged 62.1 points in 2004 compared to 2003. IBM established itself as the dominant vendor in the local x86 Blade server market with a 71.2- percent revenue share.

"IBM’s ability to sustain its lead in the overall server market in the Philippines was underpinned by strong presence in the z and i series markets and robust growth in its x series business," IDC Asia Pacific senior analyst Nishant Dave said.

He said strong commitment to offering cutting-edge technology solutions such as blades and continued focus on finance and manufacturing sectors enabled IBM to stay ahead of competition.

IBM also took market leadership in the overall total storage market in the Philippines, with a 35.4-percent revenue share in 2004, registering a year-on-year growth rate of 62.3 percent.

The company continued to demonstrate strong market growth in both the external and internal storage as it registered a 44.4 percent year-on-year growth rate in the external storage space, and an 88.1 percent year-on-year growth rate in the internal storage market for 2004.

"IBM’s continued strong performance in the Philippine market indicates that we have the right strategy at the right time as we help our clients with the right systems solutions for their business demands," IBM Philippines systems and technology group country manager Ireen Catane.

She added: "It is a market verdict in favor of our technology leadership, proven price/performance superiority, and our ability to deliver solutions for the high-end as well as for the small and medium businesses market. We intend to further consolidate our market share this year and extend our business focus to offer solutions for the government, telecom and FSS segments."
