Lea, ibang klase ang gagawin sa Bernarda...
Nagbabalik sa Philippine theater stage si Tony Award-winning actress at Hollywood Walk of Fame star Lea Salonga, at this time, she is taking on a role na very different from the characters she has played before.
Si Lea ang gaganap bilang Bernarda Alba sa upcoming Philippine staging ng Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba, presented by Theatre Group Asia (TGA).
Makakasama muli ng TGA ang Broadway icon matapos ang kanyang successful at sold-out run bilang The Witch sa Into the Woods noong 2025.
Pero this time, ibang klaseng “motherhood” ang kanyang gagampanan bilang si Bernarda – isang mahigpit na ina na namumuno sa kanyang pamilya gamit ang takot at mahigpit na mga panuntunan.
Umiikot ang kuwento kay Bernarda, isang ina na nagpatupad ng walong taong mourning period para sa kanyang limang anak na babae matapos mamatay ang kanyang second husband.
Para kay Lea, malaking challenge ang pagganap bilang Bernarda, lalo na dahil hindi pa niya dating nakilala ang karakter o napanood ang play bago niya ito tanggapin. “To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t encountered this play before, which may work in my favor as I have no preconceived notions or strong opinions,” sey niya sa panayam sa Broadway World.
“After reading both Chay’s English translation and then Guelan’s translation into Pilipino, despite the literal terror I feel in my soul, this is an absolutely important work to tackle. It fits our culture and is timely given the state of current events in the world,” saad pa niya.
Inamin din niyang excited siya and scared at the same time sa gagampanang papel.
“To borrow a line from Into the Woods, I’m ‘excited and scared.’ My Tagalog, strangely enough, tends to lean towards the ‘matatas’ side. I once wrote a post on Threads in Pilipino from start to finish, trying not to incorporate either English or Spanish. A few folks might’ve been surprised,” sey niya.
Isa rin sa kanyang preparations ang pag-aaral nang mabuti sa Filipino script kasama si Guelan Valera Luarca. “As for preparations, I’ve enlisted Guelan’s help in navigating the script, and am ready to ask questions about why he chose certain words over others in his translation. His use of the language isn’t just beautiful but adds so many layers of subtext and meaning,” pagbabahagi niya.
Ang nasabing play ay nakatakdang maging second production ng TGA para sa 2026–2027 season at magbubukas sa Pebrero 2027.
