CEBU, Philippines — Cebu is positioning itself for another major push into business tourism after winning the right to host MICECON 2027, the country’s largest gathering of meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) professionals.

The event, which returns to Cebu after 13 years, is expected to bring together international buyers, event organizers, trade delegates and industry leaders, providing a potential boost to hotels, airlines, transport operators, restaurants and other businesses that depend on visitor spending.

The winning bid was formally announced during the Philippine Travel Exchange (PHITEX) 2026 hosted dinner at Solaire Resort Entertainment City in Manila.

The result also represents a rare display of coordination among Cebu’s public and private sectors.

The Cebu MICE Alliance, working with the Department of Tourism Central Visayas, the Hotel Resort Restaurant Association of Cebu (HRRAC), the Cebu Association of Tour Operators and the province’s business chambers, led the campaign for the hosting rights.

The bid brought together the Cebu provincial government and the mayors of Cebu City, Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City under a single “One Cebu” proposition — an effort aimed at presenting the island as one destination rather than a collection of competing jurisdictions.

Josef Chiongbian, vice-president for external affairs of the Cebu MICE Alliance and general manager of Savoy Hotel Mactan Newtown, said the collaboration was central to Cebu’s successful bid.

“Months of rigorous preparation went into building this proposal, but our greatest strength was bringing our local leaders together,” Chiongbian said.

The return of MICECON comes as Cebu seeks to strengthen its position as a regional business and tourism hub. Its convention facilities, hotel inventory and transport infrastructure give it an established base for large-scale events, while its proximity to major Asian markets provides an additional advantage.

For the local economy, the significance of the event extends beyond delegates and conference halls.

Large conventions generate demand across accommodation, aviation, ground transport, food and beverage, retail and other services, spreading visitor spending well beyond the venue itself.

Cebu’s challenge now is to convert the hosting opportunity into a longer-term pipeline of international events.

The province is expected to showcase its hospitality, cultural assets and approach to sustainable event management during MICECON 2027, while using the gathering to strengthen relationships with buyers and organizers who could return for future conventions and corporate events.

Detailed programs, venues and registration schedules are expected to be announced in subsequent official briefings.

For Cebu’s business community, however, the significance of the 2027 hosting rights is already clear—the province has another opportunity to turn its reputation as a tourism destination into a more durable position as a center for business travel and international events, Chiongbian said.
