‘Taguig open to NBI, PDEA drug stings’

MANILA, Philippines — Taguig welcomed yesterday anti-narcotics operations in the city by all law enforcement agencies.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is stepping up monitoring and surveillance of alleged drug dens and shabu laboratories in the city.

“We do not claim that Taguig is free from illegal drugs,” the city government said in a statement. “We recognize that the problem is real, persistent and requires the combined efforts of local and national law enforcement agencies.”

The NBI-Dangerous Drugs Division reportedly observed the emergence of shabu flea markets in Taguig following the arrest of a drug suspect last month.

“That is precisely why we are saying to the NBI, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine National Police and all other authorized drug enforcement units: come to Taguig. Operate in Taguig. Coordinate with us. We welcome your presence and your lawful operations,” the local government said.

Based on police data, 5,560 people have been arrested on drug-related charges in Taguig from 2023 to Aug. 20 this year.

In 2026 alone, P13 million worth of drugs have been confiscated in five barangays in Taguig.

At a recent press conference, NBI Director Melvin Matibag denied he is politicking in the bureau’s crackdown on Taguig drug operations.

Asked for comment, Metro Manila police officer-in-charge Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano said the PDEA is the lead agency for the national anti-drug campaign and barangay clearing.

“The National Capital Region Police Office works closely with and supports the PDEA when it comes to anti-narcotics operations,” Abrahano told The STAR.

The PDEA has yet to comment on the matter.
