32 dead, 8.1 million affected by recent storms, habagat
MANILA, Philippines — More than 8.1 million people have been affected by Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay and Neneng and the enhanced southwest monsoon, or habagat, across 10 regions, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday.
In its Aug. 30 situation report, the NDRRMC said around 2.3 million families, or 8.1 million individuals, were affected across the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, the Cordillera Administrative Region and Metro Manila.
Some 43,500 people from 13,500 families were staying in 523 evacuation centers.
The NDRRMC also reported 32 deaths, three missing persons and 19 injuries.
The following are reported deaths, according to the NDRRMC:
- Benguet (15): Baguio City reported 10 landslide-related deaths, Atok recorded 3, and La Trinidad reported 2.
- Batangas (4): Drowning deaths occurred in Batangas City and Mabini, alongside a landslide fatality in Santa Teresita and an electrocution in Lipa.
- Rizal (4): Two died from a rockslide in Rodriguez, one from a fallen tree in Antipolo, and one from drowning in Binangonan.
- Occidental Mindoro (2): Two fatalities were reported in Rizal due to electrocution and drowning.
- Caloocan (2): Two individuals drowned.
- Quezon (1): Drowning deaths were reported in Candelaria and Sariaya.
- La Union, Oriental Mindoro, and Negros Occidental: One drowning/storm fatality each in Luna, Puerto Galera, and Cadiz, respectively.
P8.48-billion in damage. Infrastructure damage has reached P6.16 billion, while agricultural losses were estimated at P2.32 billion.
The NDRRMC also reported around 3,200 damaged houses, including 355 that were destroyed and about 2,800 that were partially damaged.
A total of 117 local government units have declared a state of calamity, including province-wide declarations in Benguet, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales and Cavite.
Government agencies and local governments have so far distributed P1.69 billion in humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
