Jahns hobbles with 73, slips to 26th as Han seizes lead
MANILA, Philippines — Keanu Jahns faltered when the going got tougher Friday, limping to his first over-par round of the week — a 73 — to tumble from joint sixth to a share of 26th after three rounds of the Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament at the Damai Indah Golf’s BSD course in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia.
After two impressive rounds of 68 and 66 had put the Philippine Golf Tour standout in contention, Jahns struggled to maintain his rhythm and touch, particularly on the long holes. He bogeyed three of the four par-5s, surrendering much of the advantage he had built earlier in the week through his strong play on the same holes.
Jahns did manage four birdies, including one on the par-5 fourth, but those gains were offset by three bogeys on the other par-5s and two more dropped shots elsewhere as he settled for a roller-coaster 36-37.
The 73 left the Filipino-German at nine-under 207, nine strokes behind American Nathan Han, who followed his spectacular second-round 61 with a 66 to take sole possession of the lead at 18-under 198.
Han birdied four of his first seven holes before a lone bogey on No. 10 briefly checked his charge. He quickly regained momentum, however, making three birdies over the final five holes to post a pair of 33s.
Former Philippine Open champion Berry Henson, also of the US, produced one of the day’s most impressive displays, pouring in nine birdies over 15 holes with a combination of precise shotmaking and hot putting. He moved to 17-under 199, just one shot behind Han, and into a tie for second with England’s Finlay Mason and Matt Killen, who carded 66 and 69, respectively.
Chinese Andi Xu, winner of last week’s Indonesia Pro-Am, also made a major move with a sizzling 63 to reach 16-under 200 and join Malaysia’s Khavish Varadan, who fired a 64, Canada’s Henry Lee (66) and local standout Kevin Akbar (66) in a tie for fifth.
With the top of the leaderboard tightly bunched, a shootout looms in Saturday’s final 18 holes of the $150,000 Asian Development Tour event.
Jahns, who was firmly in the conversation after the opening two rounds, will now have to settle for a comeback bid after losing ground in a difficult third round. He briefly appeared poised to arrest his slide after recovering from a bogey on No. 3 with consecutive birdies on Nos. 4 and 5.
But the momentum proved short-lived. He bogeyed the par-5 eighth for the second straight day, then dropped another shot on the par-5 13th before bogeying the following hole.
Jahns finally steadied himself with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, but another bogey on the demanding par-5 18th capped his difficult day and left him nine strokes off the pace.
Angelo Que, meanwhile, carded his second straight 70 to reach 209 and a share of 39th, including Sean Ramos, who mounted a strong late charge, overcoming a one-over-par backside start with five birdies over the final nine holes.
