Tino-affected residents in Mandaue get aid

CEBU, Philippines — Residents of Mandaue City who suffered losses during Typhoon Tino last year have started receiving P10,000 in financial assistance from the Cebu Provincial Government.

The assistance was distributed at the gym in Barangay Ibabao-Estancia on Wednesday, Aug. 19, benefiting a total of 1,126 residents.

On top of the P10,000 from the provincial government, beneficiaries also received 10 kilos of rice from the national government.

Cebu Provincial Board Member for Mandaue City’s lone district, Malcolm Sanchez, said the assistance was intended for residents affected by Typhoon Tino, which struck Cebu in November 2025.

“Better late than never,” Sanchez said, adding that the provincial government, under Governor Pamela Baricuatro, made efforts to ensure that assistance reached those affected by the typhoon.

Sanchez said the list of beneficiaries was initially determined by the concerned local government units, particularly the barangays, before being verified by the Cebu Provincial Government.

“The listing gikan sa city and sila ang nag-verify and submitted sa Provincial Social Welfare Development Office for the releasing,” he said.

He said residents who were qualified but were unable to receive the assistance during the distribution may proceed to the Cebu Provincial Capitol to claim their aid.

Among those who received the assistance was 70-year-old Margarita Ygonia, a resident of Sitio Lub-ang in Barangay Casuntingan, who said the aid would help affected families like hers begin rebuilding their lives after the typhoon.

“Makatabang gyud ni, salamat sa gobyerno nakatabang sa kalisod kining ayuda,” she said.

Ygonia said her family endured severe flooding during Typhoon Tino, with floodwaters reaching above their roof. Her husband also died around the same time after suffering an attack.

She said it took her family three months to return to their home because of the thick mud left by the flood.

“Lisod gyud kaayo among sitwasyon sa Sitio Lub-ang,” she said, adding that they were unable to recover many of their belongings.

Ygonia said it was the first time in 23 years that floodwaters had reached such a high level in their area. (CEBU NEWS)
