Suspected gang leader slain in ‘shootout’

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — An alleged leader of a crime group was killed in an encounter with police officers who were serving a warrant for his arrest in Salvador, Lanao del Norte on Wednesday.

Khalid Masaronay had been wanted for eight counts of murder and frustrated murder, according to Northern Mindanao police director Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano.

Probers said the suspect was the leader of the Masoranay Group tagged in illegal drug trade, contract killing and protecting suspected terrorists.

Masaronay allegedly drew his gun and opened fire at a police team, triggering a firefight that resulted in his death.
