La Mesa Dam breaches limit; Metro Manila waterways under watch
MANILA, Philippines — La Mesa Dam began overflowing Monday afternoon after days of monsoon rain.
The dam's water level reached 80.17 meters as of 5 p.m., above its 80.15-meter spilling level. This raises the risk of flooding in low-lying communities along the Tullahan River across northern Metro Manila.
Excess water from the reservoir flows into the Tullahan River, which passes through Quezon City, Valenzuela, Caloocan, Malabon and Navotas.
PAGASA specifically warned communities in Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, Sta. Quiteria and San Bartolome in Quezon City, as well as areas in Caloocan, Valenzuela, Malabon and Navotas.
Residents, particularly those near riverbanks, were advised to take appropriate precautions.
Flooding remains a broader threat across Metro Manila. In an advisory issued 6 p.m, PAGASA reported moderate to heavy rains may continue over the next 12 hours because of the southwest monsoon.
The weather bureau said all rivers and streams in Metro Manila may be affected and advised people in low-lying areas to remain alert.
La Mesa Dam had climbed rapidly throughout Monday, from 79.92 meters at 8 a.m. to 80.11 meters by 11 a.m., just four centimeters short of spilling.
Persistent southwest monsoon rains and cyclones have affected Metro Manila and large parts of Luzon for nearly two weeks, displacing thousands and prompting evacuations.
