Batican stuns Stroke Play champ, barges into Match Play semis

MANILA, Philippines — Ralph Batican produced the biggest victory of his young golfing career on Thursday, pulling off a stunning 4&2 upset over third seed and reigning National Stroke Play champion Jet Hernandez to barge into the semifinals of the NGAP Match Play Championship at the demanding Luisita Golf and Country Club in Tarlac.

Few expected the Bukidnon prodigy to derail one of the tournament favorites, except perhaps Batican himself and his mentor, Philippine golf legend Frankie Miñoza.

The victory further cemented Batican's status as one of the country's brightest young talents after he carried the momentum of an impressive 5&3 victory over Jacob Casuga in the morning Round of 16.

Hernandez, however, entered the quarterfinal clash in equally dominant fashion. Fresh from a commanding 5&4 rout of another Bukidnon standout Alexis Nailga earlier in the day, he was also riding high from his overwhelming triumph in last week's National Stroke Play Championship, where he crushed the field by 22 shots over fellow national team members Chris Remata and Rolando Bregente.

But match play is an entirely different test.

Unlike stroke play, where every shot counts toward a cumulative score, match play is decided one hole at a time. A player can lose a hole and immediately recover on the next, making momentum, composure and timely execution far more critical than overall scoring.

Batican, 15, embraced that challenge.

Despite finishing only ninth in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying and entering the quarterfinals as the clear underdog, the rising star capitalized on every opening Hernandez offered. He punished errant shots, took advantage of missed putts and stayed composed under pressure to steadily build an advantage before sealing arguably the tournament's biggest upset.

Now, Batican, who will spearhead Team South in the ICTSI Elite Junior Finals in Cagayan de Oro from August 18-20, stands just one victory away from the championship match.

His next hurdle, however, could be even tougher as he takes on second seed Shinichi Suzuki, one of the field's longest hitters, in the semifinals.

The Manila Southwoods-based Suzuki, who qualified second in the 36-hole eliminations, advanced with a dominant 6&5 victory over Jed Dy.

On the opposite side of the bracket, the top seeded Bregente continued his relentless march with an emphatic 7&6 demolition of Bobe Salahog to arrange a semis showdown with Emilio Hernandez, who defeated Jacob Rolida, 4&3.

In the ladies division, Lisa Sarines emerged victorious in the much-anticipated sibling showdown, defeating twin sister Mona Sarines, 3&2, to advance to the semis. Awaiting her is Precious Zaragosa, who turned in one of the day's most decisive performances with a 4&3 rout of Ally Gaccion.

Tashanah Balangauan also secured a semifinal berth after grinding out a 2&1 victory over Nicole Gan. She will face top seed Grace Quintanilla, who needed 19 holes to finally put away the gritty Brittany Tamayo in the tournament's lone extra-hole match.

Earlier in the day, Bregente dispatched Ronel Taga-an, 3&2, while Salahog edged Mhark Fernando III, 1-up, in the Round of 16.

Suzuki defeated Geoffrey Tan, 3&1, while Dy survived a spirited challenge from Singapore's Lukeshvarunaa Elangkovan, prevailing 2&1.

Emilio Hernandez also advanced with a 3&1 victory over Edison Tabalin, while Rolida beat Patrick Tambalque, 3&2.

With the semis now set, all eyes will be on whether the fearless Batican can sustain his remarkable run and inch closer to one of the biggest titles of his burgeoning career, or if the higher-seeded contenders will reassert their dominance in the race for the NGAP Match Play crown.
