MANILA, Philippines — A worker at Cauayan airport in Isabela was arrested after making a bomb joke that created panic and quick response from security officers on Friday.

“There is a bomb inside the rear compartment of my car,” investigators quoted the worker as saying.

The joke was allegedly made as the employee walked toward the airport entrance where security personnel were stationed.

Personnel of the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup) and the PNP Explosive Ordnance Disposal and K9 unit quickly implemented standard aviation security protocols and conducted a thorough inspection of the vehicle.

Although security officers did not find any explosive or hazardous materials in the car, the unnamed airport employee was arrested for violation of Presidential Decree 1727, or the Anti-Bomb Joke law.

“There is no room for bomb jokes inside our airports. Every threat, whether real or intended as a joke, is treated seriously to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public,” Avsegroup chief Brig. Gen. Dionisio Bartolome Jr. said.
