Ramos surges to joint ninth, targets Top-5 finish in Bangkok

MANILA, Philippines — Sean Ramos put on another show of tenacity and consistency, carding a third-round 68 to move into joint ninth place and position himself within striking distance of a Top 5 finish in the Bangkok Classic on Saturday.

The 22-year-old’s moving day began early at the Phoenix Gold Golf Bangkok layout. Forced to return to the course early morning to finish a weather-delayed second round, Ramos completed it in spectacular fashion, firing four closing birdies for a stellar six-under 66.

With practically no turnaround time, he carried that blistering momentum straight into the third round, birdying three of his first seven holes. Though his pace cooled slightly on the back nine, Ramos showed immense poise – instantly erasing a lone miscue on No. 10 with clutch birdies on the 14th and 18th to wrap up a four-under par effort for the day.

At 12-under-par 204 overall, the Philippine Golf Tour standout leaped seven spots up the leaderboard to joint ninth, keeping him well within reach of the upper tier with 18 holes left to play and reinforcing his status as one of the region's most explosive young prospects.

While Ramos continued his steady ascent, local heavyweights and international contenders are setting a historic pace in this co-sanctioned event between the Asian Development Tour (ADT) and the China Tour.

Sarit Suwannarut continued his dominant display at the softened par-72 layout, combining superb shotmaking, precise iron play and a hot putter to fire a bogey-free 67 and strengthen his grip on the tournament. The Thai star extended his lead to four shots at 20-under 196, ahead of Hong Kong's Isaac Lam, who closed with a 68 for a 200 aggregate. Malaysia's Khavish Varadan fell from second to third after settling for a 71, leaving him at 201.

Ramos is coming off a tie for fifth place in the inaugural Philippine ADT Open at Luisita in Tarlac last week, following a strong runner-up finish in the ADT Players Championship in Malaysia the previous month.

His string of impressive performances suggests he could be poised for another explosive final round, with his game continuing to improve each tournament. It's a testament to his determination to raise his level week after week.

However, with Suwannarut also producing one solid round after another, Ramos, who trails by eight shots, may have to set his sights on another Top 5 finish. Still, no lead is ever truly safe in golf, especially on a course where anything can happen with everything on the line.
