Olympic boxing hopeful Villegas faced with bout vs allergies

MANILA, Philippines — Paris Olympics boxing bronze medalist Aira Villegas is trying to fight her way back to the quadrennial games, where she hopes to take another shot at a medal finish, possibly gold.
But the 30-year-old from Tacloban, Leyte would need to hurdle something outside the ring to make it happen — allergies.
“Na ER (emergency room) ako, nagsabay-sabay allergies ko,” Villegas recently told The STAR.
Villegas said she had developed a new allergy outside mushrooms that is yet to be determined.
Because of it, she failed to join fellow Olympian Carlo Paalam and a crack Philippine team that brought home four gold medals in a couple of competitions in Europe a month ago.
“I’m trying to fix everything so that I would know what to avoid when I get back to training in Baguio next month,” she said.
Villegas said she’s excited to get back into the ring and prepare for this September’s Asian Games in Aichi, Japan where the sport will be staged.
“I’m competing in the 51kg from 50kg,” she said. “But I was told we will be having a training camp before the Asian Games. We still don’t know where, but we will have one for sure.”
