Adili’s remains soon bound home for Nigeria

MANILA, Philippines — Divine Adili’s remains are set to return home to Nigeria.
The remains of the late Adili, who was one of the two Ateneo Blue Eagles who died during their team-building in Dipaculao, Aurora earlier this month, will be repatriated to Nigeria, the university said Saturday.
“As part of the University's continuing commitment to Divine Adili and his family, preparations are underway for the repatriation of Divine's remains to Nigeria, where he will be laid to rest in accordance with his family's wishes,” Ateneo said in a statement posted on Facebook.
There will be two representatives from the university to accompany Adili on his journey, Ateneo said, which includes Fr. Munching de Guzman, SJ.
De Guzman has begun the necessary preparations for travel, including obtaining the required vaccinations and medications for entry into Nigeria.
“While documentary and travel arrangements are still being finalized in coordination with Divine's family and the relevant authorities, preparations continue to ensure that Divine's return home is carried out with dignity, care, and respect,” it said.
“We ask the Ateneo community to continue keeping Divine and his family in your prayers.”
The 21-year-old Adili and 18-year-old Rene Baterbonia died in a drowning incident in Aurora.
Other members of the team said that they were initially on shallow waters before tall waves dragged them to deeper parts of the sea.
Following the tragic deaths, Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin and manager Epok Quimpo stepped down from their posts, while other coaching staff members present in the training are prohibited from participating in UAAP-related activities.
Ateneo also announced that the remains of Baterbonia have been brought to Talacogan, Agusan del Sur, where he will stay until his burial on June 24.
“Ateneo de Manila working closely with Ateneo de Davao, coordinated the arrangements for Bobet's return home and continues to accompany the Baterbonia family during this time,” the university said.
“Discussions are ongoing on the support that may be most helpful to the family, including educational assistance for Bobet's six siblings, who are expected to relocate to Davao and enroll at Ateneo de Davao University under scholarship support.”
