Street Fighter adds first-ever Filipino character

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino fans of Street Fighter 6 have a new character to root for as Capcom has unveiled the first-ever Filipino character in the history of the long-running fighting game franchise, Yasmine. 

The Eskrima-wielding fighter will join Street Fighter 6 on August 3 as the first character of the game's Year 4 roster.

Hailing from the Philippines, Yasmine specializes in Eskrima (also known as Arnis or Kali) and uses a karambit knife alongside a fast-paced, acrobatic fighting style. According to her character story, she learned to fight under the guidance of her lolo alongside her kuya before embarking on a journey to uncover what happened after her sibling's sudden disappearance.

Many of Yasmine's moves draw directly from Filipino language and culture. Her attacks include “Daloy ng Tubig", “Talim ng Hangin”, “Mukha ng Langit" and “Pangil sa Likuran”, while her Super Arts are named “Hiwa ng Kalangitan”, "Nakatagong Lakas”, and "Pamumukadkad ng Sampaguita". One of her techniques, "Alon", is a follow-up attack that places Yasmine in a powered-up state called "Bayani Mode" when landed successfully.

The character's design features several Filipino-inspired elements. Yasmine's primary outfit takes inspiration from traditional Filipino attire, incorporating blue, red and white colors as well as the design of a sun associated with the Philippine flag. Her signature weapon is a karambit knife, a curved blade often associated with martial arts across Southeast Asia.

Adding to the local connection, Yasmine is voiced by Filipino-American voice actor Abby Espiritu, who is also known for voicing Ajaw in Genshin Impact.

Espiritu celebrated the announcement on X, writing: "Beyond humbled & unbelievably proud to announce I'm the voice of YASMINE, the newest playable & the first ever Filipino character in Street Fighter. As a first-gen Fil-Am, I am honored to bring Yasmine to life. This feels like a dream. Mabuhay!"

Yasmine arrives in Street Fighter 6 on August 3 and will be available to players who own or purchase the Street Fighter 6 Year 4 Character Pass or Ultimate Pass.
