Jonkie: Cash reward for Palaro medalists

CEBU, Philippines — For bringing honor to the city during the Palarong Pambansa 2026, the Mandaue City government will grant cash incentives to student-athletes and coaches who brought home medals in the national sporting event held in Agusan del Sur from May 24 to 28.

Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano announced the incentive program during a session at the City Hall on Wednesday, June 10, alongside Committee on Education Chairman and City Councilor Atty. Joel Seno and officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) Mandaue City Division headed by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Bianito Dagatan Jr.

Under the city’s existing ordinance for national sports achievers, gold medalists will receive P15,000 each, silver medalists P10,000, and bronze medalists P7,000.

Coaches of medal-winning athletes will also receive the same corresponding incentives.

Councilor Seno clarified that in cases where an athlete wins multiple medals, only the highest medal will be considered as basis for the cash incentive.

Meanwhile, Mayor Ouano commended the athletes and coaches for their efforts in representing Mandaue on the national stage, stressing that their achievement reflects discipline and dedication in sports.

“Salamat kaayo sa inyong sakripisyo, determination ug dedication. Win or lose, salamat kaayo for representing the city well, and we are very proud of you,” Ouano said.

The mayor added that the incentive program is intended not only as a reward but also as motivation for young athletes to continue excelling in sports and bring further pride to the city in future competitions.

Mandaue City’s delegation secured a total of 17 medals in this year’s Palarong Pambansa, helping boost Central Visayas’ fourth-place finish in the overall regional standings. — /LPM (FREEMAN)
