Viral cop hits Napolcom chief

MANILA, Philippines — Instead of apologizing for arresting a senior citizen over a minor traffic collision, a policeman has accused National Police Commission (Napolcom) executive officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan of trying to curry public favor.

At yesterday’s briefing, Cpl. Simeon Suan was expected to issue an apology for manhandling 76-year-old Santiago Garcia in Taguig.

Video footage that went viral on social media showed Suan dragging and handcuffing Garcia, despite pleas from bystanders to go easy on the senior.

“I want to apologize, but please give me a chance, give me due process,” Suan said, stressing that the video did not show the entire picture.

“Huwag tayo magpa-pogi sa media, sir,” Suan told Calinisan.

Suan admitted to being demoted after Calinisan mentioned his criminal record, which listed grave coercion, unlawful arrest and slight physical injuries.

When Calinisan claimed Suan received P30,000 from Garcia as an amicable settlement, the policeman denied it and accused Calinisan of using him to look good before the media.

Calinisan ordered the filing of criminal charges against Suan.

Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has vowed to sanction Suan for disrespecting Calinisan.
