DFA ipinatitigil 'coral destruction' sa West Philippine Sea; Tsina pinaghihinalaan

MANILA, Philippines — Labis na nabahala ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) sa pagkasira ng mga bahura sa exclusive economic zone nito sa karagatan, bagay na pinaghihinalaang kagagawan ng Beijing.

Sabado lang nang ibalita ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command ang malawakang "coral harvesting" sa Rozul Reef — isang erya sa West Philippine Sea kung saan nakita ang kumpulan ng Chinese maritime militia.

"We, therefore, call on everyone concerned to act responsibly and cease all activities that can damage our precious marine environment," ayon sa pahayag na inilabas ng DFA nitong Lunes.

"The well-being of millions of people who depend on the South China Sea for their livelihood is at stake."

Kamakailan lang nang mamataan ng air assets ng WESCOM ang presensya ng diumano'y 23 Chinese fishing vessels sa Rozul Reef nitong ika-7 hanggang ika-7 ng Setyembre. Pwera pa ito sa swarming ng limang vessels sa Escoda (Sabina) Shoal at dalawa pang iba sa Baragatan (Nares) Bank.

Ilang beses nang inirereklamo ng DFA ang negatibong epekto sa kalikasan ng mga dayuhang barko sa maritime zones ng Pilipinas, lalo na't kinatigan na ng Permanent Court of Arbitration noong 2016 ang soberanyang karapatan ng Maynila sa West Philippine Sea kontra sa 9-dash-line claim ng Tsina.

Sa kabila nito, patuloy itong hindi kinikilala ng Tsina habang iginigiit na kanila ang kalakhan ng South China Sea. Ang West Philippine Sea ay bahagi ng South China Sea na bahagi ng EEZ ng Pilipinas.

'Patay, durog-durog na corrals'

Kahapon lang nang kumpirmahin ng Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ang "extensive damages" sa Rozul Reef at Escoda Shoal.

Ani PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea, CG Commodore Jay Tarriela, lumabas sa ilan sa kanilang underwater survey na "halos wala nang buhay" sa mga nasabing West Philippine Sea features.

"Moreover, the surveys conducted in Escoda Shoal revealed visible discoloration of its seabed, strongly indicating that deliberate activities may have been undertaken to modify the natural topography of its underwater terrain," ani Tarriela kahapon.

"The presence of crushed corals strongly suggests a potential act of dumping, possibly involving the same dead corals that were previously processed and cleaned before being returned to the seabed."

 

 

Idiniin din ng Coast Guard na maaaring nakaambag ang walang-habas at iligal na na fishing activities ng Chinese Maritime Militia sa pagkasira ng kapaligiran sa WPS features.

Dagdag pa nina Tarriela, mahalaga ang pag-aalaga sa marine environment para mapanatili ang mga likas-yaman at masuportahan ang mga lokal na komunidad.
