Trenching activity sa West Valley fault, nakumpleto na ng QC govt. at Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines - Nakumpleto na ng  Quezon City govern­ment at ng Philippine Ins­titute of Volcanology­ and Seismology (Phivolcs­)  ang trenching activity sa  West Valley Fault line sa Brgy. Bagong Sila­ngan sa lung­sod upang malaman at madetermina ang pinagmumulan ng fault line tulad ng ground rupture movements at slip rate estimates  doon. Ang aktibidad ay kinabibila­ngan ng pag­huhukay sa dalawang  trenches,  may 50 metro ang haba sa loob ng 50 ektaryang lupa ng Banco Filipino sa Brgy. Bagong Sila­ngan na batay sa  Metro­ Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS) ay may ma­taas­ na susceptibility­ sa lindol na nasa kaha­baan ng  Brgy. Payatas sa  QC.  

Bunga nito, naitala ng geologists ng Phivolcs ang pagkakaroon ng  ground displacement partikular ang unti-unting pagba­bago ng sediment layers sa may  fault. Sa ngayon ang Phivolcs ay nagsasa­gawa ng pagko­lekta ng pi­raso ng mga uling para sa carbon-14 analysis para  malaman­ ang tamang oras ng pagtama ng lindol at ang edad ng sediment layers­ na naapektuhan ng ground displacement. Ayon sa MMEIRS, ma­a­aring mag­resulta ng lindol na may lakas na magnitude 7.2 kapag gumalaw ang West Valley­ Fault line. Una rito, ini­utos ni QC Mayor Herbert Bau­ tista bilang danger zone ang 7 kilometrong haba ng fault line na nasa loob ng lungsod.

“The safety of our residents, particularly those living on top of the faultline, is non-negotiable, our plan is to discourage the construction of structures within the 5 meter-wide borders or buffer zone on both sides of the fault line. We are considering declaring this buffer zone as non-residential to avoid further damage in case of ground rupture,” ayon kay Bau­tista.
