Corona ipapahiya 'pag humarap sa impeachment court - Miriam

MANILA, Philippines - Tama lamang na hin­di humarap sa trial si impeached Chief Justice Re­nato Corona dahil posibleng ipahiya pa rin ito ng mga senator-judges at ng prosekusyon.

Pahayag ito ni Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago sa kabila ng paniniyak ni Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile na igagalang ang chief justice.

Ayon kay Santiago, hindi naman mai-screen ni Enrile ang tanong ng mga senador kapag nakasalang na sa witness stand si Corona kaya hindi pa maiiwasan ang pagpapahiya dito. 

Sinabi pa ni Santiago na tama ang naging pahayag ni defense lead counsel former Justice Serafin­ Cuevas na magi­ging bukas si Corona sa panggigisa ng prosekus­yon at mga senador.

“So this is I think is a well founded fear that he might be asked questions just to embarrass him or for no purpose but only to make him squirm on the stand for example, or make him lose his (Corona) temper,” sabi ni Santiago.

Naniniwala si Santiago na may mga magbabato pa rin ng mga misleading, irre­levant at immaterial na tanong kahit pa sinigurado ni Enrile na igagalang ng impeachment court si Corona kapag humarap sa witness stand.

Matatandaan na inihayag ni Enrile na tanging si Corona lamang ang maa­aring magpaliwanag tungkol sa mga ibinibin­tang sa kaniya.

Karapatan din umano ni Corona na huwag tumestigo kung ayaw nitong kusang humarap sa impeachment court.

“That is the right of the accused. You cannot sub­poena the accused in a quasi criminal case. It’s his right against self incri­mination. We can subpoena other witnesses but not him,” ani Santiago.
