Compulsory insurance sa OFWs

MANILA, Philippines - Pinasinayaan kahapon ng Department of Labor and Employment ang inilunsad na “compulsory insurance coverage for agency-hired overseas workers” ng dalawang higanteng insurance company na ginanap sa Sofitel Plaza Hotel, Pasay City.

Ang insurance coverage ng mga OFW ay naaayon sa mandato ng Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipino Act of 1995. Dumalo rito sina Melecio Mallillin, pangulo ng Philippine Charter Insurance Corp. (PhilCharter, kaanib ng Metro Bank Group) at Alfredo Tumacder, Jr., pangulo ng United Cocolife Assurance Corp. (Cocolife).

Layon ng bagong batas na bigyan ng insurance cove­rage ang lahat ng OFW tulad ng minimum $15,000 accidental death, $10,000 natural death, $7,500 permanent total disablement, $100 subsistence allowance sa loob ng anim na buwan sakaling masampahan ng kaso.

Bibigyan din ang OFW ng katumbas ng tatlong buwang sahod sa bawat taon ng kontrata sakaling hindi ito pasuwelduhin ng amo. Ilan pa sa benepisyo ay ang libreng pamasahe ng kamag-anak sakaling maospital ang OFW ng pitong araw o libreng pamasahe sa kasong medical evacuation o medical repatration.

Ayon kay Eduardo Atayde, pangulo ng Passenger Accident Management and Insurance Agency, INC (PAMI) na itinalaga ang kanyang kompanya bilang “common management company” ng PhilCharter at Cocolife para pangasiwaan ang mabilis at epektibong pamimigay ng benepisyo sa mga OFW saan dako ng mundo.
