'War hero' nahirang na Army Chief

MANILA, Philippines - Nahirang na susunod na Army Chief ang kauna-unahang Medal of Valor Awardee na si Major General Arturo Ortiz matapos na aprubahan ni Pangulong Aquino ang pagtatalaga sa 12 senior officers sa ikatlong bugso ng rigodon sa Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Si Ortiz, miyembro ng Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class ’79 ang hahalili kay Lt. Gen. Reynaldo Mapagu mula sa Class ’78. Si Mapagu ay iluluklok naman bilang AFP Vice Chief of Staff o no. 2 man ng AFP kapalit ng nagretiro ng maaga na si Lt. Gen. Nestor Ochoa.

Sa rekord ng Philippine Army si Ortiz ay pinarangalan ng “Medal of Valor” sa ipinakita nitong kabayanihan ng buong giting na makipagpalitan ng putok sa may 200 rebeldeng NPA sa Sitio Wanepolon, Brgy. Pandaran, Murcia, Negros Occidental noong Abril 6, 1990 bilang Commander ng 606th Special Forces Company at ng CAFGU elements kung saan 85 rebelde ang napaslang sa 2 oras na bakbakan.
