CEBU, Philippines —   A facility that aims to help drug offenders start over is now fully operational in the town of Daanbantayan, northern Cebu.

The local government of Daanbantayan recently launched the operation of its Balay Silangan Reformation Center located in Barangay Pajo.

The facility will accommodate 15 reformists who are the first batch of beneficiaries that will undergo a one-month reformation program.

While inside the facility, the LGU said the reformists will engage in spiritual and mental counseling, and will attend lectures and skills training.

They will also have gardening activities, and exercise will be part of the reformation initiative.

After completing the program, the reformists will undergo an aftercare program where they will be provided with employment and livelihood, giving them a higher chance to turn their lives around.

Balay Silangan is part of the harm reduction effort of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for drug surrenders where they are given intervention, counseling and livelihood with the end-view of helping them to become more productive and law-abiding citizens.

Daanbantayan Mayor Sun Shimura led the launching last July 2, together with Vice Mayor Elver Ali Abucay, SB Member Jupiter Roy Rosell, PDEA-7 Regional Director Emerson Margate, former Mayor Vicente Loot, PDEA Provincial Officer Milba Mojado, TESDA Coordinator Janice Lucmong, PMAJ Jan Christian Bautista, and Fr. Onie Rosaroso. (CEBU NEWS)
