Basilan gets first state university

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines —The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has converted the Basilan State College in Lamitan City into a state university, the first in the island province.

CHED Chairperson Shirley Agrupis conferred the university status during a ceremony in Isabela City on Friday.

The conversion was based on Republic Act 11554 enacted on June 24, 2021 following the passage of a House measure authored by then congressman now Basilan Gov. Mujiv Hataman.

“The conversion provided Basilan with its first university that can offer more courses and accommodate more students,” Hataman said.
