July crimes down 36% despite high-profile shootings – PNP

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police reported yesterday a 36.12-percent drop in focus crimes in July, reflecting what the PNP described as sustained law enforcement efforts despite a string of high-profile shootings.

PNP chief Gen. Melencio Nartatez Jr. said focus crimes decreased to 2,209 from July 1 to 31 from 3,458 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Rape cases posted the biggest drop at 56.93 percent, followed by motor vehicle theft at 46.15 percent and motorcycle theft at 42.59 percent.

Nartatez attributed the lower crime volume to intensified police visibility, crime prevention measures and cooperation with local communities and partner agencies.

“The PNP remains steadfast in protecting lives, preserving peace and order and upholding the rule of law,” he said.

Asked whether the decline in crime had been overshadowed by recent shootings, Nartatez said the PNP treats all shooting cases seriously regardless of the profile of those involved.

He noted that some incidents get wider attention “because of the personalities involved” or the gravity of the crime.

He added that the extensive media and social media coverage of such incidents also helps police respond more quickly and intensify investigations.

Nartatez cited the recent killing of a vlogger in Caloocan, saying the swift progress in the investigation of the case resulted from the coordinated efforts of probers from different police stations, provinces and regional offices.

He said the case demonstrated the PNP’s improving investigative capability and inter-unit coordination in solving major crimes.
