Komento ni Ted Failon hindi ikinatuwa ng mga weather forecaster

MANILA, Philippines – Hindi nagustuhan ng grupo ng mga weather forecasters ang naging komento ng batikang newscaster ng ABS-CBN na si Ted Failon tungkol sa paggamit nila ng katagang storm surge sa pag-uulat ng panahon.

Sinabi ni Philippine Weathermen Employees Association (PWEA) president Ramon Agustin na iginagalang naman nila ang komento ni Failon ngunit nakakasira ito sa mga tauhan ng Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration's (PAGASA).

“The PWEA honestly respects the opinion of Mr. Ted Failon ... that most PAGASA people are not aware of what a storm surge is. According to Mr. Failon, this is because one PAGASA personnel died as a victim of a storm surge herself," pahayag ni Agustin.

Sinabi ni Failon sa kanyang radio show nitong Martes ng umaga na kulang ang kaalamanan ng mga tauhan ng PAGASA sa storm surge na pumatay sa libu-libong katao sa probinsya ng Samar at Leyte.

Paliwanag ni Agustin na namatay ang kanilang kasamahan habang ginagawa ang kanyang trabaho.

"It is [a] general rule in PAGASA that personnel on duty should not leave or abandon their posts at all cost if a locality is under threat from a tropical cyclone," sabi ni Agustin.

"Our lady colleague ... died while in the service of our country," dagdag niya.

Pero inamin naman ni Cecilia Monteverde, assistant weather services chief ng PAGASA na bigo nilang ipaliwanag nang mas malinaw sa publiko ang storm surge.

Samantala, hindi naman nagkulang ang Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (Project NOAH) sa pagbibigay ng babala tungkol sa storm surge.

Si dating PAGASA deputy director Catalino Perez Arafiles ang nagpakilala ng katagang storm surge sa Pilipinas noong 1990s.
