Legarda sa Coast Guard: Paigtingin ang seguridad

MANILA, Philippines – Hinimok ni Senador Loren Legarda ang Philippine Coast Guard na paigitingin pa ang kanilang pagbabantay sa teritoryo ng Pilipinas kasunod ng bagong insidente ng pagsadsad ng dayuhang barko sa bahura ng Pilipinas.

Alam ni Legarda na imposibleng mabantayan ang bawat pulgada ng mga baybayin ng bansa, pero aniya kailangang maghanap ng mga paraan upang mapahigpit ang pagbabantay sa marine environment.

"It is lamentable that we have another incident of coral reef destruction caused by a foreign vessel... We may not be able to guard every inch of the entire coast and Philippine territorial waters, but we have to find ways to strengthen our capacities to guard and protect our marine environment," pahayag ni Legarda.

Iniulat ng National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council na sumadsad ang MV Unicorn Lodger, na may 18 tripulanteng Vietnamese, sa Sambauan Island, Maripipi, Biliran nitong Huwebes ng gabi.

Patuloy pa rin ang imbestigasyon sa insidente na sumira sa 270 metro kuwadrado ng mga bahura.

Nitong Enero ay sumadsad ang US minesweeper na USS Guardian sa UNESCO World Heritage site na Tubbataha Reef. Matapos matanggal ito noong Marso ay isa namang Chinese fishing vessel ang sumadsad sa Tubbataha.

"Barely have our reefs recovered from that incident and here comes another foreign vessel, inflicting damages on our coral reefs in Maripipi," sabi ni Legarda na kilalang environmentalist.

Aniya ang mga imbestigasyon sa mga insidente sa karagatan at panghuhuli sa mga may sala ay hindi solusyon sa problema, sa halip ay kailangan ng gobyerno na paigtingin ang seguridad upang hindi ito maulit.

"No amount of penalties can immediately bring back the damaged corals that took decades to mature. Without corals, our food security will be threatened,” banggit ng senadora.

"Enough of the "slap on the hand" approach. We need more grit and teeth in the enforcement of both local and international laws," dagdag ni Legarda.
