NEW DELHI (AP) — A senior Indian police official says the main suspect in the gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus has committed suicide in jail.

The police official at Tihar jail says Ram Singh killed himself on Monday. Singh was on trial on murder and rape charges.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Singh was accused of driving the bus on which a 23-year-old student was raped and fatally assaulted by a group of six men in December. The assault horrified Indians and set off national protests calling for better protection of women.
