PRO-8 records 71 suicide cases

PALO, LEYTE, Philippines — The Police Regional Office-8 has reported 71 incidents of suicide in Eastern Visayas for the period January to August 15, this year.

Senior Superintendent Ma. Bella Rentuaya, PRO-8 regional information officer, told reporters that the statistical data on suicide incidents in the region was released thru the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) of Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division.

Data showed that 84.51 percent of the incidents happened inside residences, with family problems being the foremost reason or trigger, she said. Hanging with a rope has been most common method in suicides also.

Rentuaya said statistics showed that of the 71 suicide incidents, 54 were males while 17 were females. Males, aged 21 to 30, tend to commit suicide than women because men are more impulsive than women, she said, adding that men would rather keep problems to themselves than talk about it.
