CARMEN, BOHOL, Philippines — Teachers of Calatrava Elementary School in Barangay Calatrava of this town, about 53 kilometers from Tagbilaran City, are now asking why the construction of their new school building was stopped and abandoned by the contractor.
One teacher, who asked not to be named, told The Freeman that the contractor, BMC Construction, had started laying out the site and digging up big holes for the building’s foundation but, days after, the works stopped without any explanation.
School principal Belen Cempron confirmed this, in a separate interview, but she could not provide details on the matter.
The teachers have been yearning for new school buildings to replace the old ones that almost collapsed or could not be used anymore for dangerous cracks all over following the earthquake last year.
They claimed that the Department of Education funded the construction but the Department of Public Works and Highways implemented it by commissioning the works to BMC.
Representative Arthur Yap (3rd district), Vice Mayor Pedro Budiongan and village chief Crisanta Añusa vowed to look into the matter. (FREEMAN)
