TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines – The Ubujan contingent is not made up of professional dancers, merely eager amateurs but they got it right during the 2nd “Saulog†Street Dance Competition 2014 on the eve (April 30) of this city’s annual fiesta celebration in honor of St. Joseph, the worker and patron saint at CPG sports complex.
The Ubujan contingent with Barangay chairperson Mary Jane Ruiz at the helm was declared the grand champ, wowing judges in their scintillating costume and dazzling overall performance.
Ubujan also harvested six other minor awards: Saulog’s “Best in Musicality,†“Best in Choreography,†“Best In Production Design,†“Best in Costume,†“Most Colorful,†and “Best in Field Performance,†the judges declared.
Aside from cash of minor awards, the Ubujan contingent received from City Mayor Baba Yap and his wife, Jane Cajes-Yap the amount of PhP150,000 cash and trophy after the announcement made by city administrator Leonides “Edi†Borja and Ms. Glo Araneta, who served as hosts of the more than three-hour program. Barangay Taloto dancers garnered the second spot pocketing a hefty PhP100,000 cash plus trophy and Barangay Manga led by Barangay chairperson Leda Saco — was declared 3rd place with PhP70,000 cash plus trophy.
The contingent of Poblacion II clinched the “Best in Streetdancing,†and “Most Lively†awards. Barangay Dao is the “Most Discipline Group;†Barangay San Isidro – “Best In Ambiance,†and Barangay Dampas – “Best in Finale Performance.â€
Street Dance criteria of the competition include: choreography — 30%; Overall performance— 20%; Costume and Props — 15%; Discipline — 20%; and Musicality — 15%. Criteria for field performance: Theme/concept/ritual – 20%; chorepgraphy – 30%; performance – 20%; production design – 15%; and musicality – 15%.
The competition also included the search for festival’s King and Queen awards. And the King and Queen of Barangay Poblacion III were declared winners, besting 13 others.
Brgy. Dao got the first runner-up in festival King; Manga — 2nd runner-up; Dampas — 3rdrunner-up; and Mansasa — 4th runner-up. Ubujan is first runner-up in festival Queen; San Isidro — 2nd runner-up; Dao — 3rd runner-up; and Manga — 4th runner-up.
City Mayor Baba Yap together with his wife, Jane Censoria Cajes-Yap and Gov. Edgar Chatto and his better-half, Pureza Veloso-Chatto led the celebration at the complex where a multitude of spectators jam-packed the oval and bleachers.
The big event started at past three PM with a grand parade of the participant-contingents from city hall grounds down to J. A Clarin street, passing through CPG avenue on the way to the complex.
