Prayers and preparation

Alerts have been issued about the possible landfall of what is termed as a "monster" typhoon "with maximum sustained winds of 314.84 kilometers (170 knots) per hour when it approaches the Visayas at 9.7N 131.6E on Thursday, November 7, at 2 p.m" as shared by our ever-helpful colleague Leo Lastimosa as of 8 a.m., November 6, Philippine time.

Let us all pray, pray, pray for all to be spared and protected. Many are praying "na mahilis ang bagyo," that the typhoon will dissipate and will not continue its course and not inflict any harm or damage to people and communities.

We pray most especially that those in Bohol, especially those still recovering from the last huge quake, be spared and that they do not have to experience yet again the wrath of another calamity named Typhoon Yolanda!

With prayers, may we all prepare as well for the reported monster typhoon coming. Keep safe everyone!

It is always best to be prepared for typhoons, earthquakes, and other disasters and emergencies.

Red Cross reminds all to prepare a lifeline kit that will be good for at least three days following a disaster. What should be in the kit?

First, water. "Prepare clean water in clean airtight containers for washing, drinking and cooking."

Then food. "Store non-perishable food only. Food should be sufficient for three days consumption of every family member. Prepare disposable plates and utensils as well."

Red Cross suggests next to prepare emergency tools/gears.  Included are plastic laminated ID card for family member(s) with special concerns. Indicate name, address, phone, who to call in case of emergency, contact details, the condition of the bearer and special instructions on what to do in case seen unconscious (e.g. diabetic).

Have in hand emergency numbers to call (Red Cross Opcen, Red Cross Chapter, fire station, hospital, etc.)

Include whistle, preferably one that is loud and has a compass on it, flashlight with extra batteries, multi-purpose knife, matches or lighter and candles (but make sure you do not use matches or candles until you are certain there are no gas leaks), AM radio transistor with extra batteries or self-powered, glow sticks, plastic sheeting or garbage bag, ropes (avoid nylon), and sleeping bag.

Also remember to prepare and include some personal effects and hygiene kit that include extra clothing, undergarments, antibacterial soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, hand towels, comb/ hair brush, hand sanitizer or alcohol, and even sanitary napkin.

You may also wish to put in a plastic envelope important documents and money, prepaid cards and a list of important information (security insurance number, tax identification number, driver's license, passport number, bank account details, insurance policy, etc.).

For those with elderly, children, infant or with family members who are sick and with special needs, remember to put in the emergency kit, emergency medication like acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, anti- diarrheal, for cough and colds, children's medication, as well as prescription medication (for three days, like anti-hypertensive, insulin, etc.), children's food.

Then, you may wish to also add a first aid kit since accidents or emergencies may happen. This first aid kit can include adhesive strips, hypo-allergenic medical tape, bandages, gloves, among others.

Finally, the Red Cross Emergency Kit guidelines advise that all remember to wear sturdy shoes that can safely allow for walking through rubble and debris. It may also be advisable to include as well some toys, games, or materials that may provide comfort and entertainment during stressful times. Make sure you put the emergency kit within a bag or backpack that you can lift or carry.

Prayers and preparation - our best anchor to see us through emergencies and challenges.

Again, keep safe everyone. Our prayers with you all that you will be spared and continue to be protected by God.
