Don Sergio's way of scolding his men

“Isang kaso ng asawang nagtaksil,” says a come-on ad for a TV show. Nagtaksil ang asawa. Which asawa -- husband or wife?

He said Don Sergio, a gentleman in the strictest sense of the words, did not want to embarrass anyone, high or low, with public scolding. “Iyang ipatawag ang sad-an ug adto kasab-i sud sa iyang opisina,” Noy Temiong, whose father had worked under Don Sergio, said.

Noy Temiong said his father once quoted Don Sergio as saying in one of his speeches: “Ang dungog sa tawo, lakip na ug labi na ang mga kabus, angay respetohan kay mao ray ilang bahandi.”

Our World & Nation editor John Rey Saavedra figured in a road accident one evening recently. While driving along the New Imus Road (which was not well lighted) he bumped a drunk man. John spent valuable time and money on the drunkard's hospital care and his car's shattered windshield.

See? Didn't I write not long ago about the need for a law against drunken loiterers not only against drivers? Let any new city councilor think about fathering an ordinance along this line.

OVERHEARD. Some squatters living near the waterways like esteros were talking about the P18,000 subsidy given by the government to Metro Manila squatters willing to relocate. One squatter said: “Nganong sila ra man ang hatagan og kuwarta para magrelokit?” Replied another squatter: “Bitaw, sah noh? Mahal sad baya ang bugas dinhi sa ato.” First squatter: “Hoy, buang. Ang P18,000 para kana sa gustong morelokit, dili ipalit bugas.”
