BAPTISMAL SPONSORS. A well-known priest said in his homily: “Why do most parents want well-to-do and prominent people to be their babies’ baptismal sponsors?” He said it would be much better to choose a close neighbor for ninong or ninang. “Unless the parents are thinking of the babies’ future, meaning their Christmas future with the ninong and ninang.”
THE TRUTH. The priest said most parents choose well-heeled sponsors and persons popular in social circles to be their compadre or comadre, although a baptismal sponsor living in a barong-barong and one living in a mansion are the same in the eyes of God.
