CEBU, Philippines - With thousands of people expected to flock the cemeteries this weekend, Mandaue City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Placido Jerusalem has warned the public to be mindful of the waste they carry, or they will be penalized.
“Naturalmente, daghang tawo, daghan sad na’g basura. So, we will implement the laws on proper waste disposal,” Jerusalem told reporters.
He said they will be placing large garbage bins in all cemeteries in Mandaue and deploy CENRO personnel to ensure that cemetery-goers are following these laws.
He said he already talked to public market vendors, who will also be selling their goods in Barangay Guizo, where the city’s four cemeteries are located, to contain their waste in one place.
There will also be a public address system to constantly announce the locations of these garbage bins and for the people to be reminded to leave the cemeteries with their trash with them or thrown to these bins.
There will also be Clean and Green personnel from the different barangays to be deployed to clean the streets, he said.
Jerusalem said the past years, tons of waste were collected from the cemeteries and even on the street. This year, with this campaign, he hopes that the public will cooperate by following CENRO’s advisories. — Liv G. Campo (FREEMAN)
