27 barangays ordered: Clean canals, drains

CEBU, Philippines - Officials of the 27 barangays in Mandaue City have been ordered to check the canals and drainage systems, and then clean these up if found clogged.

Mayor Jonas Cortes said barangay officials should clean the canals in their areas to avert flooding when the rainy days come. Drainages should also be de-clogged at this time while the weather is still sunny, he said.

The mayor said he and the barangay officials will soon set a date for a city-wide clean-up operation and that he will ask contractors in the city if they can lend their equipment to the city government for this activity,

"The last time we did a city-wide clean-up, contractors helped us because we lacked the needed equipment," said Cortes.

The mayor also urged residents and the public to stop littering so that garbage will not clog the canals and drainages. —RAE (FREEMAN)
