Dumlog execs ask city to donate lot for brgy

CEBU, Philippines - The barangay officials in Dumlog has asked the City Government of Talisay to donate 7,000 square meter lot it purchased for their barangay in order to build a multi-purpose building, sports complex and rehabilitation center for residents during tragedies and catastrophes.

City Councilor Edward Alesna passed a resolution asking Mayor Johnny De Los Reyes to donate the lot in favor of the Barangay Dumlog.

The request was made by Dumlog Barangay Captain Nelson Abellana.

City Councilor Dennis Basillote, however, questioned the motive of the barangay officials.

“Dili ba diay matukod ang inyong multi-purpose building kung wala’y deed of donation?” Basillote asked the barangay officials.

Basillote pointed out to the officials in Dumlog that there are several multi-purpose building like in Bulacao, Pooc and Tabunok which were constructed in the city government lot without even donating the property to the barangay.

In his appearance before the Talisay City Council, Dumlog Barangay Councilman Bobby Cañizares said there is a need for Talisay City to transfer the title of the lot to Dumlog to allow them to introduce improvements and to avoid future legal implications.

But Basillote insisted the barangay can proceed with the construction without donating the lot to the barangay.

Vice Mayor Romeo Villarante, the council presiding officer, said there is no urgency for the council to decide on the approval of the resolution sponsored by Alesna.

He said the resolution will be referred to separate committees — laws and real property — before taking action.

The former administration of then mayor now Councilor Socrates Fernandez, had purchased a lot owned by the Rafols family, the intention of which is for public use of Barangay Dumlog.

It can be recalled that Basillote’s son, former barangay councilor Rex Basillote, ran for barangay captain in Dumlog but lost to Abellana. — Garry B. Lao/JRS (FREEMAN)
