Talisay City needs more policemen

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Councilor Danilo Caballero wants additional policemen to guard and further improve the peace and order situation in the city.

City Councilor Danilo Caballero, who is the vice-chairman of the City Peace and Order Council and the council committee on peace and order, said the city has only 78 policemen, something he thinks will not suffice to secure the total population.

"We have only 78 police officers in the city and we are indeed short of police officers," the councilor said, adding that the city should have more than 10 police personnel considering the number of population.

The city has 200,772 population as of 2010 National Statistics Office.

In a minimum police to population ratio, Caballero said that it shall not be less than one policeman for every 1,000 persons.

Considering the fast growth of the city in terms of population, development and economic activity, Caballero seeks the additional policemen.

The councilor believes that additional police officers roaming the city would lessen the occurrence of crime. Theft is the top crime committed in the city.

In a crime statistics report, city police chief Superintendent Reycel Carmelo Dayon said cases of theft recorded reached 78 from January to April, followed by robbery with 28 and physical injury, 11. Dayon pointed out that Barangays Lawaan I and Tabunok are where theft cases usually occur.

Caballero is asking Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Noel Gillamac for additional 50 to closely meet the manning level of the PNP. (FREEMAN)
