CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Mayor Johnny De los Reyes ordered the City Engineer’s Office to get to the bottom of the flooding at the old Tabunok Public Market.
Market vendors and passersby have been complaining for weeks about the foul smell of the water that comes from the drainage system and which settles at Colis Street.
The fish section of the old market is located along Colis Street.
The drainage is clogged and waste is also expelled from sewers when it rains.
It has been raining since December.
Talisay City Councilor Danilo Caballero, who heads the committee of market and slaughterhouse operations in the council, said the mayor is coordinating with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to unclog the drainage system near Colis Street.
City engineer Audie Bacasmas attributes the flooding to the accumulation of mud and waste in the drainage system.
Bacasmas said the culverts should be cleaned to allow water to flow.
“Kinahanglan nga sudlon ang ilawom sa culvert aron hawanan sa mga nakaali nga lapok ug mga plastic,†he said. (FREEMAN)
