Alayon’s bet for ABC top post is undecided

CEBU, Philippines - Businessman and barangay Jaclupan captain Joel Orbiso is not keen on running as president of the Association of Barangay Captains in December despite Alayon’s head and founding chairman former congressman Eduardo Gullas’ support.

Orbiso, 52, who is on his third and last term as barangay captain, is Alayon’s choice for the ABC election for president, as replacement for outgoing president barangay Dumlog captain Charles Basillote.

“I welcome the support of  my colleagues but I’m not yet sure,” Orbiso told The Freeman yesterday.

While the position is tempting, Orbiso said he is afraid he may not be able to attend to the functions and duties at the city hall because of his business.

He however said there are four others who are more  deserving of the position and willing to fulfill this duty.

Cebu first district Rep. Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas said the next ABC president must be someone who is loyal to the party, competent, and who is on his last term as barangay captain.

Based on the records of the ABC, at least five  barangay captains who are now serving their last terms are Joel Orbiso of Jaclupan, Perla Cabanes of Tanke, Raul Cabañero of Bulacao, Delia Ybañez of  Lawaan III, and Maning Cabriana of Tabunok.

Alayon captured an overwhelming majority during the last barangay elections, with 18 of 22 candidates emerging winners. (FREEMAN)
